Arriving at Athens
Athens International Airport was a poky little place built back in 1938 and located to the south of the city, where planes would thunder over houses before touching down on the tarmac. When Greece became the location for the 2004 Games it was wisely decided that the airport was not up to the job of receiving the millions of visitors that would be arriving, so a new airport was built outside the city.
El. Venizelos International Airport, named after the influential politician Eleftherios Venizelos, a name that crops up many times across Greece, may have opened back in 2001 but has always retained its sheen and efficiency, to the point of scooping several awards. The airport is linked with Athens and the rest of Greece by a rail and Metro network.
