Must-Sees on Santorini
Thanks to the wide variety of cultures and civilisations that have contributed to Santorini’s past, there is a plethora of artifacts and treasures spread over the island for us to see and admire today. At the risk of repeating ourselves, Acrotiri is a must-visit, as is the site of ancient Thira, where remains of both Hellenistic and Roman settlements can be found, along with some 3rd and 4th century monuments.
Fira’s two cathedrals, Catholic and Orthodox, are impressive, as is the Gizi Manor, and anyone exploring the islands capital would be advised to stop at as many of the archealogical and prehistoric museums that can be found there. For those more interested in the human aspect, there is a well-known folklore museum too.
Santorini Restaurants
Greece and food go together well, so it’s no surprise that a list of the best restaurants in Santorini would take up a website all of its own, but that being so, there are always some that stand out. One of the most famous is 1800, found in a converted traditional mansion house in Oia, where the Mediterranean food is as impressive as the views of the sunset. Staying in Oia, the restaurant Ambrosia and its sister restaurant/café Ambrosia and Nectar also come recommended, especially for those wanting a more intimate dining experience complete with a spectacular view.
Again in Oia, cake fiends may wish to visit the Melinio Café, where some very good sweets can be enjoyed on the small terrace overlooking the Caldera. In Fira, the Selene restaurant is very well known and aside from the great location and cuisine, they even offer a cooking school for anyone wanting to learn more about cooking the Greek way!
Santorini Trips
A trip to Santorini would not be complete without a visit to the volcano itself. Various ones can be arranged from the simple to the lavish. For example, a simple trip over to the volcano will include a hike to the peak with its impressive view and then down again for a dip in the hot springs. A more comprehensive trip would take in other volcanic points around the island and possibly one of the smaller islands nearby too.
Do remember that the volcano has no crater to speak of, so don’t expect to stare deep into the earth’s belly. It can also get very hot in the height of summer so plenty of water will be needed! Regardless of which trip you take, the volcano is so important to Santorini that it feels the right thing to do by paying your respects. |
